Rio Tinto has inaugurated its latest iron ore mine, Western Range, in the Pilbara region. The opening ceremony was attended by Western Australian Premier Roger Cook, Federal Resources Minister Madeleine King, Yinhawangka Traditional Owners, and representatives from Rio Tinto and China Baowu Group (Baowu), who are joint venture partners in this $2 billion project.
The mine is capable of producing up to 25 million tonnes of iron ore annually and aims to support the Paraburdoo mining hub for two decades. This venture between Rio Tinto (holding a 54% stake) and Baowu (holding 46%) was completed within budget and on schedule. It includes infrastructure such as a primary crusher and an 18-kilometer conveyor system linked to the existing Paraburdoo processing plant.
Western Range is significant for sustaining over 880 jobs at Paraburdoo and contributing to both local and national economies through royalties and taxes. It also represents Rio Tinto’s first project featuring a Social, Cultural, and Heritage Management Plan co-designed with the Yinhawangka Traditional Owners.
Premier Roger Cook remarked on the project’s economic importance: “The opening of Western Range is a significant achievement, and its importance to Western Australia’s economy cannot be overstated.” Similarly, Minister Madeleine King highlighted its broader impact: “The opening of Western Range is fantastic news for the Pilbara, for Western Australians, for Traditional Owners and for the nation.”
Yinhawangka Aboriginal Corporation Board Chairwoman Robyn Hayden emphasized cultural recognition: “For Yinhawangka people, Country is everything – it holds our spirit, our Law… The opening of the Western Range mine represents a shift in how our heritage is being recognised and respected.”
China Baowu Group Chairman Hu Wangming acknowledged the collaborative success: “The success of the Western Range project is not only a milestone in China-Australia resource co-operation but also a vivid reflection of joint efforts…”
Rio Tinto Chief Executive Jakob Stausholm expressed pride in working with local communities: “I’m particularly proud of the work we’ve done with the Yinhawangka People… Partnering with Baowu ensures our biggest customer directly benefits with a consistent supply…”
First ore was processed at Western Range earlier this year in March. The project is part of several replacement projects supporting Rio Tinto’s commitment to developing resources in Pilbara.
