Rio Tinto is actively seeking collaboration with entrepreneurs, researchers, and innovators at London Tech Week. As the sole mining company present, Rio Tinto aims to address the increasing global demand for critical minerals while promoting sustainable practices.
Dan Walker, Chief Innovation Officer at Rio Tinto, emphasized the importance of innovation in addressing global challenges such as climate change and urbanization. He stated, “Innovation is in our DNA. For over 150 years, Rio Tinto has operated at the intersection of mining and technology, and there has never been a time when innovation is needed more.”
Walker highlighted the complexity of these issues and expressed a desire to partner with leading innovators. “These are deeply complex issues that no organization can solve alone. We want to find the very best innovators and entrepreneurs to join our global network,” he said.
Rio Tinto’s initiatives include an Accelerator Program in partnership with Founders Factory and a Ventures Fund supporting startups focused on mining and sustainability. The company also invested $150 million last year in establishing the Rio Tinto Centre for Future Materials alongside five prominent universities to advance research towards achieving net zero emissions.
During London Tech Week 2025, several sessions featuring Rio Tinto executives will take place. On June 9th, CEO Jakob Stausholm will discuss sustainable material supply alongside Dan Walker. On June 11th, Marie-Pierre Paquin will participate in a panel on university spinouts’ role in innovation, while Pekka Santasalo will moderate a session on integrating mining with ClimateTech solutions.
