Teck Resources Limited has announced that the Government of British Columbia has granted an Environmental Assessment Certificate for the Highland Valley Copper Mine Life Extension project. This decision is expected to extend the life of Canada’s largest copper mine and bolster the North American critical minerals supply chain.
Jonathan Price, Teck’s President and CEO, stated, “This positive decision by the Government of B.C. will support extending the life of Canada’s largest copper mine, strengthening the North America critical minerals supply chain and contributing to jobs and economic activity.” He also expressed gratitude towards Indigenous Governments, local communities, employees, and stakeholders for their involvement in the assessment process.
The company plans to begin site preparation soon while working on obtaining additional permits. A final construction sanction decision from Teck’s Board of Directors is anticipated in the third quarter of 2025.
The Highland Valley Copper Mine Life Extension project is projected to create approximately 2,900 jobs during its construction phase. Once operational, it will support around 1,500 direct jobs and contribute $500 million annually to GDP. The extension aims to prolong operations at Highland Valley Copper until the mid-2040s.
